Substance Abuse and Addiction
Substance use and addiction have deeply affected the Grassy Narrows community, particularly in the years following the devastation caused by mercury poisoning and the loss of traditional livelihoods. The historical trauma of residential schools, forced relocations, and the erosion of our cultural and economic base has created conditions where substance abuse became a significant issue. But healing is possible.
At Grassy Narrows Mental Health Services, we offer Substance Abuse and Addiction Treatment programs that blend modern therapeutic approaches with our community’s traditional healing practices. We understand that overcoming addiction is not just about treating the symptoms but addressing the root causes of trauma, disconnection, and loss.
Our goal is to provide compassionate, culturally appropriate care that supports individuals on their path to recovery while reconnecting them with their identity, community, and the land.
Our Approach
Our substance abuse treatment approach is holistic and rooted in the understanding that healing must encompass the mind, body, spirit, and community. We offer a range of support services, including:
Culturally Relevant Counseling
Our counselors are trained to provide care that respects and integrates Ojibwe cultural values. We work with individuals to explore the personal, historical, and cultural factors contributing to substance use, providing a safe and supportive space for healing.
Detox and Medical Support
For individuals struggling with more severe addictions, we provide access to medical detoxification services in collaboration with nearby healthcare providers. These services ensure that detox is managed safely, and individuals are supported throughout the process.
Individual and Group Therapy
Both individual and group therapy sessions are available to help individuals understand and manage their substance use. Group therapy fosters community support and shared experiences, while individual sessions allow for personalized care and deeper exploration of personal issues.
Traditional Healing Methods
Traditional healing is central to our substance abuse treatment. We work closely with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to offer ceremonies, such as smudging, sweat lodges, and healing circles. These practices help individuals reconnect with their culture and spirituality as part of their recovery journey.
Aftercare and Relapse Prevention
Recovery is an ongoing journey. We provide aftercare services to ensure individuals have continued support after completing their initial treatment. This includes relapse prevention programs, where individuals learn skills to manage triggers, build resilience, and maintain sobriety.
Family and Community Support
Substance abuse affects the entire community, not just the individual. We encourage family involvement in the recovery process, recognizing that healing relationships can strengthen the support system for those battling addiction. Family counseling services are available to help rebuild trust and repair damaged relationships.
Specialized Programs for Adult Men and Women
Understanding that the experience of addiction can differ for men and women, we offer specialized programs to address the unique challenges faced by each group. This includes trauma-informed care that recognizes the gendered impacts of trauma, such as violence or abuse, and provides a safe space for healing.
You Are Not Alone
If you or a loved one is struggling with substance use, know that help is available. We are here to support you every step of the way, offering compassionate care rooted in the strength of our community and traditions. Healing is possible, and you don’t have to face this journey alone.
