Community and Peer Support Programs
At Grassy Narrows Mental Health Services, our Counseling and Therapy programs are designed to provide compassionate, culturally sensitive care that supports individuals through their mental health challenges. We understand that the journey to wellness is deeply personal, and we offer a range of counseling options to meet the diverse needs of our community members.
What Are Peer Support Programs?
Our approach combines modern therapeutic methods with traditional healing practices, honoring both the wisdom of our ancestors and the benefits of contemporary mental health care. We provide a safe, non-judgmental space where community members can share their stories and receive support tailored to their experiences and cultural values.
Accessing Counseling and Therapy
Counseling and therapy services are available to all adult members of the Grassy Narrows community. We aim to make these services as accessible as possible, including offering:
- Telehealth options for remote counseling sessions.
- Sliding scale fees and free services for those in need.
- Flexible scheduling to accommodate your life and work commitments.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, struggling with anxiety, coping with loss, or seeking a path to healing, our counseling services can help. We are here to walk beside you on this journey, offering support and guidance rooted in both our cultural traditions and the best of modern mental health care.
Traditional Healing in Counseling for Adults
At the heart of our services is the integration of traditional healing practices with modern counseling. We honor the cultural heritage of Grassy Narrows by blending the two approaches to provide holistic care. For many adults in our community, traditional practices are crucial to the healing process. We offer:
Elder guidance during therapy sessions, drawing on the wisdom of our community’s spiritual leaders.
Ceremonies such as smudging, drumming, and healing circles as part of the therapeutic process.
The use of medicinal plants and connections to the land as a way to heal spiritually and emotionally.
What We Offer
Individual Counseling
Our individual counseling services are available for those who wish to work one-on-one with a trained counselor. This service provides a confidential environment where you can explore personal challenges,
such as:
Anxiety and depression: Managing overwhelming emotions and finding balance.
Grief and loss: Healing from personal or community-related loss.
Life transitions: Navigating changes in relationships, work, or family life.
Trauma recovery: Processing intergenerational trauma and past experiences.
• Coping with life transitions
Our counselors use a variety of techniques including talk therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and culturally appropriate healing approaches. The goal is to empower you with tools to navigate life’s difficulties while promoting resilience and emotional well-being.
Family Therapy for Adults
Our family therapy services help adults navigate family dynamics that may be impacted by mental health challenges, trauma, or cultural disconnection. Family therapy can:
• Address intergenerational conflicts rooted in differences of upbringing or the effects of trauma.
• Support families struggling with the impacts of mental health or substance use issues.
• Strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and foster healthier relationships.
Whether it's resolving conflicts or healing emotional wounds, family therapy aims to restore balance and unity within households, recognizing that the strength of our community begins with the well-being of our families.
Group Counseling
Group counseling brings individuals together to share their experiences in a supportive community setting. These groups focus on specific issues,
such as:
Substance use recovery: Shared support for overcoming addiction.
Grief and loss: Processing personal and cultural losses together.
Trauma healing circles: Using traditional practices to heal intergenerational trauma.
Emotional wellness: Managing stress and anxiety through shared tools and discussion.
• These sessions foster a sense of connection and understanding, helping individuals realize they are not alone in their struggles. Sharing in a group can also reduce feelings of isolation and offer new perspectives on healing.
Mental Wellness Peer Groups
Trauma-informed therapy is designed to help adults process and heal from deep, often intergenerational trauma. Our trauma-informed approach focuses on:
• Somatic therapy, helping individuals reconnect with their bodies to release trauma stored physically.
• Mindfulness practices for managing distress and grounding in the present moment.
• Culturally grounded techniques that incorporate traditional Ojibwe practices, stories, and ceremonies.
This approach ensures that healing occurs at a pace that feels safe and respectful, acknowledging the complex layers of trauma experienced by adults in our community. We aim to empower individuals to reclaim their mental and emotional well-being in a supportive, culturally aware environment.
