Community and Peer Support Programs
At Grassy Narrows Mental Health Services, we understand that healing is not just an individual journey—it is a collective one. Our Community and Peer Support Programs are designed to foster healing, resilience, and empowerment through the strength of community relationships. These programs bring people together to share their experiences, learn from one another, and provide mutual support, creating a safe and supportive environment.
What Are Peer Support Programs?
Peer support programs connect community members who are experiencing similar challenges—whether they are related to mental health, trauma, substance use, or grief. These programs are led by individuals who have walked a similar path and understand the struggles firsthand. This creates a space where participants can speak openly, knowing they are understood and supported by those who share their experiences.
Empowering Self-Determination:
The programs help participants realize their inner strength and take charge of their healing process, which can lead to long-term recovery and resilience.

Benefits of Peer Support
Culturally Grounded Healing: Peer support builds on the Anishinaabe tradition of mutual care, storytelling, and community sharing. It helps break down the stigma often associated with mental health by creating a non-judgmental space for healing.
Shared Experiences:
Group leaders have faced similar challenges and offer practical advice, empathy, and understanding.
Emotional Support:
Participants share encouragement, coping strategies, and emotional support in a safe, caring environment.
Empowerment:
Peer support programs build confidence, promote personal growth, and strengthen community bonds.
Types of Peer Support Programs We Offer
Healing Circles
Our healing circles are rooted in the traditional practices of the Anishinaabe people. Led by respected community members and Elders, these circles provide a sacred space for sharing, listening, and healing. Healing circles are open to anyone in the community who wants to connect with others, share their stories, or simply listen and reflect.
Substance Use Peer Support Groups
These groups provide a safe space for those who are recovering from substance use or addiction. The groups are facilitated by trained individuals who have gone through similar struggles and are now in recovery themselves. The focus is on offering support, sharing coping strategies, and fostering accountability.

Youth and Elders Mentorship Program
This program bridges the generational gap by connecting youth with Elders to foster learning, cultural exchange, and emotional support. Youth benefit by gaining life lessons, cultural knowledge, and wisdom from the Elders, while Elders share their stories and experiences, helping to preserve traditions and pass down cultural heritage.
Mental Wellness Peer Groups
These groups offer a supportive environment for individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. Here, participants can openly discuss their experiences, challenges, and triumphs, while gaining insights and support from their peers.
